I am Chas Fisher, and I run the Real Wing Chun Kung-Fu Club in Seattle, WA. We are a small group, and we focus on building kung-fu skill sets that are practical, actionable, and true to what I think is "real" Wing Chun.
I have taken some heat in the past for my use of the"real" descriptor in our name. To be very clear, I am not implying that other schools or lineages are not real. Let me be explicit: I endeavor to teach what I think are "real" Wing Chun concepts, principles and applications. What other sifus teach and practice is their business, not mine.
I do think that Wing Chun has undergone a very major diffusion in the last thirty or forty years, and that some of the unique, core ideas of Wing Chun have been obscured, misinterpreted, or lost to the shameless commercialization of the art, both in the West as well as in Asia. My intent is to propagate Wing Chun the way it might have been before this gross commercialization of the art. This is my primary motive in making RWC essentially commerce-free.
To this end, I do not make my living from our members, and we have removed all modern manifestations of a commercial operation: we do not train in uniforms, we do not follow a ranking system, we do not charge "testing fees," there are not membership contracts, and our modest monthly dues are used to pay our expenses, with excess collection going into a student-overseen fund.
The purpose of this blog is to share ideas, theories and applications as they relate to Wing Chun. For the moment, I am allowing comments. If comments are made that are inappropriate, I will edit or delete them, and I reserve the right in the future to disallow comments altogether.
